The Stewardship teachings presently arising within the Catholic Church can largely be traced to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Pastoral Letter, 'Stewardship – A Disciple’s Response', published in 1992. As clarified in this Letter, Stewardship is not an initiative, it is a response – a response to the free gift of Salvation we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.
In essence, Stewardship leads us into offering back to God, and to the community, what God has freely given to us – our time, our talent and our treasure.
Thus, Bishop John J. McRaith, a member of the U.S. Bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee on Stewardship, is quoted as saying, “Once one chooses to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, Stewardship is not an option.”
